The Museum was founded in December 1956 as a historical Museum. Fifty-three years it was renamed the national historical Museum.
The main focus of the Museum is the study of Museum exhibits and work with the Museum audience. In the Museum there is an ongoing scholarly work and search for new items have significant value for future generations.
The Museum has more than 300 000 exhibits, including paintings, documents, manuscripts, rare printed editions, archaeological items, gems, weapons, musical instruments and household items. The collection covers the period from the prehistoric era to the present days.
On the premises of the Museum’s own collections and long-term exhibition projects. In addition, the Museum engaged in cultural and educational activities and excursions. It regularly holds presentations, themed evenings and mass of the Museum’s activities.
