Minsk City Hall – the main decoration of the Freedom Square and the symbol of historical memory of Minsk. The building was restored in 2002 – 2004 years at the place and in the way in which the city remembered it in the middle of the XIX century.
The history of the Minsk City Hall began with getting the city of Magdeburg law in 1499. The town hall was used primarily as a “house of assembly” – the seat of the city council – a body of municipal government. It also houses an archive, the court kept the symbols of the city – the coat of arms, seal, Privilege on Magdeburg Law. The Town Hall was the center of economic – economical and cultural life of Minsk. Its doors were open to citizens, who could ask for help from members of the fair magistrate. On the square in front of the town hall was trading, held city festivals, actors showed theatrical performances – batleechnye performances. In the period when the Belarusian lands within the Russian Empire, when the functions of the magistrate were abolished, in the Town Hall was the police guardhouse, theater, music school. In the middle of the XIX century. Town Hall building was destroyed.
Today, the town hall creates a new story.
