Museum of modern art – is to date one of the youngest museum structures in Belarus. It was created by the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus № 704 of June 13, 1997. In September of the same year new director of the museum was appointed – Vasily Petrovich Sharangovich (People's Artist of Belarus, Professor V. P. Sharangovich over several generations of Belarusian artists – the teacher, the AlmaMater). For many years he headed the department of graphics of the Belarusian State Theatre and Art Institute, now the Belarusian State Academy of Arts and later he took a position of a Rector. Opening of the exhibition halls was held on 18 May 1998 year, and the first exhibition entitled "New Collection" initiated the Museum’s activity in exhibiting of Modern Arts.
A small team of scientific staff spent much work to promote the Belarusian art and to introduce achievements of the Belarusian art.
The museum continued to develop creatively, employees were constantly publishing articles in media, appeared on television, and participated in creative workshops, held presentation at conferences.
Numerous publications in the press, performances on radio and television on the activities undertaken by the Museum, are the signals that the museum is actively working to promote the Belarusian art.
The museum's collection today consisted of four and a half thousand units, the total area is 260 m2.
In general, the creation of a new type of museum as exhibition and information center is an important element in the expansion and development of the cultural space of the republic.
Museums main areas of development were formed during its activities: gathering collections of contemporary fine study of the process in all its stylistic variety and difference of shapes and trends, hosting the conferences, symposiums and meetings of Contemporary Art and carrying out a number of other projects. The museum is now looking for new forms of promotion of contemporary art and ready for active cooperation with Belarusian artists as well as artists from near and far abroad.
The main objective of the museum is the scientific acquisition of the museum’s collection. Determination of the range and scope of the stock assembly is concluded in the name of the Museum. Therefore, the formation of collections of the Museum of Contemporary Fine Arts is carried out primarily within the timeframe – works of art that are fundamental to the formation and development of modern forms, styles and trends, considering accounted genre orientation, national and regional identity. But the main criterion for the formation of the museum's collection is the professionalism, talent, matching the scientific concept of the museum, novelty. Collection should reflect the whole palette of contemporary art, all kinds of that exist now, whether it's avant-garde, conceptual art or realism.
